THE Royal Navy’s flagship HMS Ark Royal arrives in the Clyde tomorrow for a three-day visit.

The legendary, 22,000-tonne Invincible Class aircraft carrier will be at Faslane for three days for routine repairs and to allow shore leave for some of the 1,100 crew.

Ark Royal had a £25 million refit two years ago, and is the only ship in the Royal Navy which can carry out dual carrier strike and helicopter landing roles.

Her main role is to carry Harrier jets which can strike deep inland in support of land forces.

Ark Royal is currently carrying Sea King, Chinook and Lynx helicopters and up to 400 Royal Marine Commandos.

Commanding Officer Captain Mike Mansergh said: “For any sailor serving in the Royal Navy, a trip to the Clyde is always a pleasure and I am sure we will enjoy our few days in Faslane.”

The ship is expected around noon tomorrow.
