Plea to save Mearns from demolition

GREENOCKIAN Roy Guy has not lived in his home town for 40 years, but he retains an interest in its old buildings.

He was particularly concerned to read via the Tele website the former Mearns Street School was under threat of demolition, albeit Councillor Alan Blair is fighting for it to be retained.

His late father, John, was headmaster of the primary school, until he retired in 1967.

Roy, who lives in Cardiff, told me: “The school had a long and interesting tradition and it is a pity all that is to be consigned to history when the building is demolished.

I try to visit the town as often as possible and hope Councillor Blair will be successful in saving the building for use. I am sure many former pupils will regret the passing of the building, although it has not been used as a school for some time.”

Roy’s father attended Greenock High School and Glasgow University. After studying at Jordanhill Training College, John Guy became a teacher at Ardgowan Primary School, until he was called up to serve with the Army in the Second World War.

At the end of the conflict, during which he was stationed in Malta, he became depute head at North Primary School in Paisley.

He was then appointed headmaster of Chapelton School in Port Glasgow. His final appointment was headmaster of Mearns Street School. The family home was at Hawthornden, 1 Johnston Street, Greenock. John Guy died in 2002 just short of his 96th birthday having been predeceased by his wife Agnes. Roy and his wife come back to the area on a fairly regular basis as they have a holiday flat in Largs. His brother Bill lives in East Lothian.
