A CHEERY Inverclyde greyhound found abandoned just last year has earned himself a starring role in TV soap River City.

Regular viewers would have spotted three-year-old Alfie making his screen debut in Shieldinch last week.

He will make his second and final appearance alongside Shellsuit Bob and Scarlett Adams tonight — and his owner, Rachel Anderson, has warned people to have their tissues ready.

The Finlaystone dog lover said: “Alfie was just a natural and charmed all the cast, they loved him.

“He really played up to it and loved all the attention. He managed to do everything in one take and the producers were really pleased with him.

“Sally (Howitt) had some trouble with her scene because her character, Scarlett, was supposed dislike the dog but she told me ‘how I am not supposed to love him with his big brown eyes?’

“After Alfie filmed his last scene the cast gave him a big cheer and I literally had to drag him off the set.”

It’s an amazing turnaround for Alfie, the black and white greyhound found abandoned in a park in Paisley last year.

Rachel, 50, has devoted the last five years to rescuing and

re-housing abandoned greyhounds from her home

in Finlaystone with partner Eddie.

But as soon as Alfie was brought through her gates, Rachel knew she wanted to keep him for herself.

Now Rachel, who makes a small cameo in tonight’s episode as well, is delighted she has a Hollywood star-in-the-making on her hands.

She said: “I knew as soon as I saw him he was something special — and now I have been proved right.

“The man who set up the part in River City has said he might have some more things coming up for him, probably adverts.

“I don’t want to give too much of the story away, but unfortunately they can’t ask him back to River City.

“But it was a great experience for both of us, and it was fascinating seeing behind the scenes of River City.

“Everyone keeps joking that he should get an Oscar for his performance and asking for his paw-tograph.”

Rachel is currently involved with the Scottish Greyhound Sanctuary.
