COPYCAT washing-line thieves have struck in Fancy Farm only days after sports gear was stolen in the east end.

Mum-of-two Alison Griffin was disgusted when she discovered four pairs of her sons’ tracksuit bottoms had been stolen on Thursday afternoon.

Alison, 44, had just read about a previous raid in Wednesday’s Tele, when she realised the trousers had gone.

She said: “I’m very angry. I read about it in the paper and I thought ‘that’s terrible’ and, when I got back from town in the afternoon, it had happened to me.

“There were only three items left on the rope — two pairs of boxer shorts and a pair of my trousers. They knew what they were looking for.”

Alison lives in Finch Road with husband Adam, 51, and sons Scott, 15, and 12-year-old Shaun.

She said: “The boys are very angry about it and so is my husband. He reported it to police.

“We’re working hard to look after our children. My sons are very tall and we have to buy adult sizes for them, so it can be quite expensive.

“These people think it’s funny, but it’s a disgrace.”

Gillian Whyte, 41, who also lost her sons’ Nike tracksuit top and Real Madrid bottoms from her drying green in Belville Avenue a few days before said: “It’s shocking that it’s happened again.

“They must be watching people putting their washing out. I know exactly how the woman feels. Boys are always growing and you can’t keep them going in designer stuff. It’s ridiculous.”

Sergeant Andy Wilkinson, of Greenock police, said: “This could have been prompted by a combination of thieves being made aware of the previous incident and thinking it is an ‘easy theft’ or possibly people coming forward to report such incidents for the first time.

“These are opportunistic thefts and I would urge people to bear that in mind when they hang out high-quality sportswear on the washing line.”

Anyone with information about either incident should call Greenock police on 492500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
