A MORTON-MAD footballer is set to fulfil a boyhood dream and strut his stuff on the hallowed Cappielow turf.

Adam Sweeney, of Inverkip, will swap the Cowshed for a pristine pitch on Saturday after sealing a place in the annual supporters’ challenge match — thanks to the Ton fans’ Trust and the Tele.

Lifelong-fan Adam, 18, was picked out of the hat as the lucky winner of our fan-tastic competition for a free place in the match — and can’t wait for the weekend to come.

He said: “It should be brilliant. I’ve been going to watch Morton since I was only four but I’ve never played at Cappielow.

“I was a mascot when I was six, but I haven’t been on the pitch since then.”

Adam, a student at Glasgow University, will be one of 28 players in the fundraising match in aid of Morton Youth Development. Fans have been bidding up to £200 to secure a coveted shirt, which they will keep afterwards as a souvenir of their special day.

The teams will be coached by Ton boss Davie Irons and his assistant, Derek Collins.

Adam, who will wear the number 11 shirt, should have no problems impressing his gaffer for the day. He said: “I’ve played for the Gourock YAC and St Andrew’s Boys’ Club, as well as playing for the Paisley and District team, but it will feel weird getting a team-talk from the Morton management.”

Adam’s entire family are Ton supporters and they will be there on Saturday to cheer him on — but he is also expecting some good-natured banter from his pals.

He said: “My mates will be going — and I think I’ll be getting a bit of stick.”

Bryan Purdue, of the Greenock Morton Supporters’ Trust, said: “We would like to wish Adam and all the other fans playing luck, and hope this fundraising event helps find the next Derek McInnes, Derek Lilley or Derek Collins.”
