DAMAGE DONE: The fire-damaged block of flats in Cumberland Road, Greenock.

A FURIOUS Greenock mum is pleading with River Clyde Homes to clean up their act after two fires ravaged her block of flats.

Kelly Forbes, of Cumberland Road, has been left with a close stinking of smoke, a dilapidated house next door and a swarm of flies outside her home after the blaze.

In October last year, a fire tore through the flat next to Kelly’s and forced the whole flat to be boarded up. And just last Wednesday, the flat above was set alight by vandals, causing water damage to Kelly’s living room walls.

Kelly’s eight-year-old daughter, Sophie, suffers from asthma — and her mum is worried about the impact the smoky conditions could have on her and her son Logan, five.

Mum Kelly, 26, told the Tele: “Sophie’s petrified to even walk up the stairs now. The whole close still smells of smoke and there are flies coming from somewhere — I hate to think where.

“I’m concerned about the health and safety of my kids.

“River Clyde Homes have said it’s not their responsibility, and I’m not sure what to do about the situation.

“I just want them to make moves to do something about it.”

A spokesman for River Clyde Homes said: “We are actively dealing with the water penetration situation caused by a fire in a house above Ms Forbes. The property has now been secured and we are taking steps today to dehumidify Ms Forbes’ home and address any decoration damage.

“Ms Forbes will not need to claim her insurance, as we will work with her to reinstate property.

“In relation to the fire some months ago, this is a privately-owned property and we understand the matter is in the hands of a loss adjuster for insurance purposes.

“We can confirm the close was cleaned shortly after that fire and we have found no evidence of flies.”

Police are treating last Wednesday’s fire in Cumberland Road as wilful fire-raising.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Greenock police on 492500.
