Demolition man on car rampage
By Brian Hossack
Greenock Sheriff Court
A DEMOLITION worker went on a one-man wrecking spree as he trashed neighbours’ cars after a boozy night out.
The sheriff court heard yesterday how William Boyd, 23, of Kirkwall Road, Greenock, dropped a concrete slab on to a vehicle belonging to a man staying in his street — before booting a car belonging to a woman who stayed nearby.
Despite admitting the mindless vandalism during his appearance in the dock, Boyd escaped a spell behind bars — but his night out landed him a £1,500 bill.
Depute fiscal Tom Smyth said police had received reports at 1am of Boyd launching a concrete slab at a car and began checking CCTV footage.
He added: “This showed Boyd throwing a stone slab on to the roof of one vehicle and kicking another.”
Defence solicitor Aidan Gallagher said: “He works for a demolition firm, which is ironic given the nature of this offence.
“There is little I can say apart from he was drinking with people from work on a night out for Christmas and he did this to these cars. He had experienced no problems at all with the owners prior to this offence.”
Boyd admitted wilfully and recklessly destroying or damaging the vehicle with a stone slab, as well as a separate charge of kicking a car in nearby Branchton Road, both on December 23.
Mr Gallagher added: “He is ashamed of his behaviour, given that these people were his neighbours, although admittedly this is his third conviction for vandalism.
“Mr Boyd has told me he would be happy to compensate these people for any loss they suffered as a result of what he did on this night.
“He is a young man who knows he was in the wrong and would like to express his regret.”
Sheriff Vincent Canavan fined Boyd £400 for each act of vandalism, adding: “In addition, you will pay compensation of £500 and £200 to the people involved.”
