Ex-footballer hit man outside club

Greenock Sheriff Court
A FORMER footballer has admitted attacking a man outside a Greenock nightclub.
Anthony McLennan, 18, punched his victim outside Word Up in Dalrymple Street at 3am on 6 January this year.
The Inverkip teenager, a former trainee with Ayr United who is now working for BAE Systems, assaulted the man after his friend and co-accused, Mark Armstrong, 20, became involved in a fracas with a group of strangers outside the club.
Depute fiscal Tom Smyth told the court: “The accused, McLennan, was involved in an argument at around 3am and appeared to be shaking hands with the person in the charge.
“He then closed the distance between them and punched him.
“The second accused, Armstrong, then punched another man, leaving him with a bleeding nose and causing his right eye to close over.
“He was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital and then transferred to the Southern General in Glasgow for further examination because he had a suspected fracture. This, however, proved not to be the case.”
McLennan’s defence solicitor, Gordon Nicol, said: “There had been an argument and he was shaking hands with the person when another comment was made to him, causing him to act in the manner libelled.”
During their appearance in the dock, Armstrong, of Florence Street, Greenock, and McLennan, of Boyd Avenue, Inverkip, admitted assault.
Sheriff Vincent Canavan deferred sentence on Armstrong for 12 months.
McLennan was sentenced to 200 hours community service.
