MORE DELAYS: Construction work is behind schedule again on the Newark Primary School site.

YOUNGSTERS will have to wait to move into the state-of-the-art Newark Primary School in Port Glasgow due to an over-run in building work.

It is the second time delays have affected the huge £9.6m project.

An original plan to open the school following the Easter break was delayed by bad weather which hampered construction work.

A second date of early June was then pencilled in — but further delays in building work mean pupils will not start classes at the showpiece school until later in the month, Inverclyde Council has confirmed.

A council spokesperson said: “The move to Newark had been anticipated for the beginning of June, but the contractor has advised of a slight over-run in their work programme.”

But children from Slaemuir, Clune Park and Highholm primaries, who join together in the new school, will still get a chance to have a look around before the summer holidays begin. The council’s spokesperson added: “We will take full possession of the school on Monday 23 June so pupils can visit the school to familiarise themselves with the building for the new term in August.”

Meanwhile, education chiefs have confirmed the £3.5m extension to Wemyss Bay Primary School is on track.

The school has been operating out of the former King’s Glen Primary, in Greenock’s east end, but the extension is expected to be completed by the end of July.
