HAPPY COUPLE: The couple as they are today, their marriage still going strong after 50 years.

A GOUROCK couple are set to celebrate 50 years of marriage — in what has proved to be a truly ‘goal-den’ wedding.

Alex and Glenn McGugan, who live in the town’s Garvie Avenue, will enjoy a quiet celebration meal with their family — 50 years after their marriage made headline news locally.

Alex, now 70, was then a well-known player on the local junior football scene, having starred for Gourock Juniors, Dunoon Athletic and Largs Thistle. As well as being intimated in the Telegraph, their wedding was also featured in a local picture supplement, due to Alex’s familiarity with football fans all around Inverclyde.

The couple’s daughter, Susanne, said: “Mum and dad’s wedding picture was actually put on the front page of an edition of the Greenock Pictorial, because he was well known through his football. When they went to Weymouth, he was being paid to play. They still have the cutting from the paper today.”

Two years after Alex married perfect-match Glenn, who is now 68, in St Ninian’s Church, Larkfield, on 17 May 1958, the couple moved south — as Alex’s footballing talents took him to England to play professionally.

They lived in Weymouth for 11 years, before returning to settle in Gourock in 1971 when Alex stopped playing.

He later worked in IBM, and Glenn in worked Marks and Spencer, before both retired.

The couple have four children, Barry, Ian, Susanne and Lorna, and seven grand-daughters, and the family are helping them to mark their magical milestone.

They are holding a get-together dinner in the Inverkip Hotel to mark the special anniversary.

Susanne said: “We are loking forward to having a nice quiet evening to celebrate with mum, dad and the family. ”
