Greenock Sheriff Court
A MAN has appeared in court charged with wasting police time — after accusing a mob of trying to murder him by torching a car with him inside.
On 23 May, Paul Cuffe, 33, of Selkirk Road, Port Glasgow, is alleged to have told two police detectives at Inverclyde Royal Hospital that a gang deliberately set fire to the car in an attempt to kill him.
The charge further claims Cuffe wasted police time and resources by causing officers to launch an investigation that placed people under suspicion of fire-raising and attempted murder.
A second charge against Cuffe alleges that he set fire to the car himself, causing extensive damage to it and damaging a second vehicle in the process.
The case was continued without plea and the accused is expected to appear again next month.
