BINMEN have been accused of refusing to lift bags of rubbish from a Gourock street.
The black bags were left out on Thursday night for collection the next morning in Kempock Street.
But while binmen emptied wheelie bins, they would not lift the bags of rubbish.
Residents claimed collectors told them they would not lift the bags because they were not marked with the Inverclyde Council logo. One nearby resident said: “It’s a health hazard for people.
“I was horrified when the collectors said they weren’t going to lift the rubbish.
“This defeats the whole campaign against litter.
“I asked why they weren’t lifting the rubbish and was told it wasn’t marked properly and they weren’t going to shift it. That means it would be there for a whole weekend and rubbish attracts rubbish. We are meant to be attracting visitors.
“We pay our council tax for a service — and that includes getting rubbish lifted and having our streets cleaned.”
Councillor George White intervened to call the council on behalf of residents to ensure the rubbish was removed.
He said: “I was happy to help when this was brought to my attention.
“I am committed to the council’s program of cleansing — we all have to pull together.” A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council said: “We can assure residents that these bags will be removed.
“Where residents do not have a wheelie bin, refuse sacks will always be uplifted providing they are put out on time and are presented properly.
“On the occasions waste is scattered or lying loose, or if it is suspected the sacks contain commercial waste, they will not be uplifted immediately by the refuse collection vehicles, but will be attended to by environmental services.”
