THIS is the dramatic moment when a van suddenly burst into flames yesterday afternoon in Wemyss Bay.

Firefighters raced to the scene as the vehicle exploded at 4pm in Cliff Terrace Road — and later said the driver had a very lucky escape.

Pictures of the fierce inferno were captured by young passer-by, Tony Mitchell, 14, of Wemyss Bay, who witnessed the incident and quickly took photos on his mobile phone.

He told the Tele: “I was walking with my brother when the explosion happened.

“There was a very loud bang. People getting off a bus in the other side of the village told me they heard it. There is an old house being cleared out and I think they were taking out some big old diesel tanks from it.

"The police told me it happened because of the fumes from that and the heat from the exhaust.”

Appliances from Greenock and from Gourock attended the fire.
