Plane steal man smashed window

Greenock Sheriff Court
A GREENOCK yob admitted causing over £1,700 of damage to a travel agent — after smashing a huge window to steal a toy plane.
The sheriff court heard how David Wiggins had been on a drinking spree at his Nelson Street home with friends when he decided to walk one of them home — prompting him to carry out the smash-and-grab theft at 2am on 15 February.
The 28-year-old decided to smash the front window of Geddes Travel in Newton Street and grab the model jumbo jet, used by the company to promote holidays abroad.
Depute fiscal Tom Smyth told the court yesterday how the yob had caused massive damage to the shop front.
He said: “The cost of replacing the window was estimated at £1,700.
“The incident took place at 2am, when the accused walked past the travel agent and decided to take the model aeroplane after breaking the window. After taking it, however, it was left and found on a footpath nearby.”
Defence solicitor Gerry Keenan said his client had been suffering from depression following the sudden death of his mother.
He told the court: “He had been with friends at his home in Nelson Street on February 15, drinking heavily and after walking one of them home, this incident occurred.
“He remembers little about it because of the amount that had been drunk earlier.”
Sheriff Peter Watson fined Wiggins £300.
