Scandal over chip suppers for prisoners

PRISONERS awaiting justice at Greenock sheriff court are being dished up lunchtime takeaways from a local chip shop.
Custody prisoners are now being given a choice of a pizza or sausage supper, collected from Gianni’s in Newton Street, by Reliance guards if the calling of their case runs late.
But prison bosses have defended the decision to introduce the meals, insisting it is a successful cash- saving exercise and not just a treat for offenders.
A court insider said: “The custody cases are scheduled to call each day at noon, but often business can run late and go on well into the afternoon. The court is then required to provide a meal for custody prisoners. This used to be a standard microwave meal, but this wasn’t really proving workable timewise if it was a busy court with lots of people up before the sheriff, so someone came up with the idea of doing a deal with a fast food place and getting the lunches in, ready to serve.”
The source added: “The official line seems to be that this deal arranged with the shop is now more cost-effective, but the rumour doing the rounds was that a lot of the prisoners simply hated the microwave food they were getting and were always kicking off and complaining about it.
“There certainly doesn’t seem to be the same rumblings from them, or their stomachs, now they are getting to take their pick from the local chippie for lunch.”
