ARMED police swooped on Larkfield last night during a dramatic disturbance.
Eyewitnesses said a crowd of more than a hundred people gathered to watch as the incident unfolded.
The area quickly flooded with police officers and emergency services teams who raced to the scene in Larkfield’s Angus Road at 6pm.
Armed response police, negotiators and dog branch units from Strathclyde Police were called in, while Strathclyde Fire and Rescue were also called to the scene.
One shocked onlooker told the Tele: “The police were swarming all over. They had their riot shields and surrounded the place.
“There were nine or 10 police vehicles, plus an ambulance and the fire brigade. I think there must have been well over a hundred people who stopped to watch what was happening.”
People in the crowd bought ice creams as they watched the drama in what was described as a ‘carnival atmosphere’.
An eyewitness said: “It was absolutely unbelievable — folk were sitting watching it and eating cones from the ice cream van, as if they were at the Battery Park circus.
“People were cheering and it became like a carnival atmosphere — it was surreal.”
Police remained at the scene for nearly two hours.
A police spokesman said a 17-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with breach of the peace, vandalism and reckless and culpable conduct.
The man is expected to appear at the sheriff court today.
