Greenock Sheriff Court
A GANG of Greenock teenagers will go on trial in two weeks accused of an axe attack on a backpacking German tourist that allegedly almost saw the man’s arm hacked off.
Joseph McCairn, 19, Andrew Barron, 17, and Lee McClure, 17, are charged with assaulting holidaymaker Thomas Tobor by striking him repeatedly on the body with the weapon before knocking him to the ground and kicking him repeatedly on the body to his severe injury — scarring the man for life.
The alleged attack took place on 24 August last year, the day Mr Tobor arrived by plane in Scotland with friend Jens Kuchenmeister to go sightseeing.
The pair had made their way to Greenock on a hike to Loch Lomond and pitched a tent for the night when the alleged attack took place.
It is also alleged Mr Kuchenmeister was punched on the head and body, put in a headlock and bitten on the ear. The group are also accused of throwing the tourist’s footwear into a stream. The youths are also charged with acting in a racially aggravated way.
The offences are claimed to have taken place on wasteground at East Hamilton Street near to Morton’s Cappielow ground.
Mr McCairn, of Sinclair Street, and Mr Barron and Mr McClure, both of Lansbury Street, are due to stand trial with the girl in early August.
