POLICE are hunting a gunman who shot a schoolboy in a Greenock street.

The thug fired what is believed to be an air weapon at the 13-year-old in the town’s Mallard Crescent.

Officers say the boy heard the sound of the gun being discharged before he was injured.

PC Deegan said: “The 13-year-old schoolboy was injured on his right side when he was struck by something which drew blood.

“Although he did not see anything, he heard the noise of what may have been an air weapon. He was not badly injured, but this may have been a far more serious incident.”

The incident took place at 9pm on Thursday. Police are now appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with any informatio,n to come forward.

PC Deegan said: “Anyone in that area who has been injured or shot at, or anyone with any information, should contact the police.”

The incident took place the same day the Tele reported that two children had discovered a loaded gun in Port Glasgow.

The youngsters, aged just eight and five, made the find in Princes Street next to St Andrew’s Church on Monday.

One of the boys’ mothers said the gun was full of ball bearings when the youngsters found it.

Fortunately, an adult accompanying the children was able to make arrangements for the weapon to be handed into police.

Chief Inspector Grant Manders said at the time: “These weapons are definitely not toys. They can cause serious injury to people and damage to property.”
