Greenock Sheriff Court

A PORT man has been banned from the roads for drug driving.

Ian MacKenzie, 21, of Langside Terrace, was pulled over by police who were concerned by his driving.

He was stopped at around 2.30am and officers could smell alcohol on his breath.

Although a breath test proved negative officers were concerned that MacKenzie’s speech was slurred.

MacKenzie was put through a field impairment test by traffic officers, which he failed.

At Greenock police office MacKenzie was examined by a custody surgeon who was of the opinion he was unfit to drive through the use of some type of drug.

MacKenzie pleaded guilty at the sheriff court to driving while unfit through drink or drugs on 5 January at Melrose Avenue.

Aidan Gallagher, representing Mackenzie, said: “Some hours before he drove the vehicle he had taken diazepam. He thought wrongly he was fit and safe to drive — clearly this had been a huge miscalculation on his part.”

The plant hire firm employee was fined £320 and banned from driving for 15 months.
