HAPPIER TIMES: Jason with nephew Nathan.

THE devastated mother of a Greenock murder bid victim says she feared her only son was going to die after the brutal attack.

Mum Molly Gourlay revealed her agonising heartache following the near-fatal assault on her son James Thompson.

The 23-year-old was left fighting for his life after suffering life-threatening neck and arm injuries following an incident in Grieve Road on Friday 22 August.

His life hung in the balance as medics battled to save him with emergency surgery. Miraculously he survived.

Molly 50, said: “I actually thought I was going to lose him last weekend. He was unconscious and on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. It was horrible. It is a mother’s worst nightmare and I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.”

The mum, who rushed to the scene when she heard what had happened, said: “When I got there, James was lying on an ambulance trolley and my brother was with him.

“I thought I was going to lose him — because of the way he was lying on the trolley and all the blood. He was shouting in pain but then at least I knew he was still alive.

“The guys that wrapped the wound with a towel saved his life and I can’t thank them enough.”

The devoted mum, who also has two daughters — Catherine, 31, and Jane, 30 — has faithfully visited the hospital every afternoon and evening.

She said: “It’s been horrendous. You just feel so helpless and there’s nothing you can do.”

The former Greenock High pupil is making a remarkable recovery due, according to medics, to his strong will to live. Police inquiries into the incident are continuing. Anyone with information should call Greenock police on 492500.
