TWO elderly women were rushed to hospital after being knocked down near Cardwell Garden Centre in Gourock yesterday.

The Greenock pensioners, who are aged 80 and 81, were halfway across Cloch Road on the central reserve when they were struck by a car.

One woman suffered a fractured hip, while the other was treated for a badly-bruised leg.

They were detained overnight in Inverclyde Royal for observation.

Inspector Alex Andrews, of Greenock’s road policing department, said: “I think the ladies have been very lucky given the circumstances of their age and the fact it’s a busy road.

“If another person had been driving, the outcome could have been a lot worse. The injuries were a lot less serious than they could have been.”

Cloch Road was blocked off shortly after the accident happened, at around 3.10pm, to allow police to carry out their inquiries. The road didn’t re-open until 5.30pm.

Inspector Andrews added: “We take an incident involving people of that age very seriously and our inquiries are continuing today.”
