A GREENOCK man is fighting for his life in hospital after a serious car smash in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The 23-year-old was at the wheel of a Toyota Celica — suspected to be stolen — when it suddenly veered out of control and careered into a wall at the junction of Baker Street and Drumfrochar Road, just after 4am.
He was taken to Inverclyde Royal before being rushed to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said: “The injured man was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital in Greenock and has since been transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow.
“Medical staff describe his condition as serious.”
Officers said there were no other people in the car when it crashed. The vehicle was being pursued by police when the accident occurred.
The police spokesperson said: “The vehicle, which had been stolen a short time earlier from the Gourock area, was being followed at a safe distance by a marked police car prior to the crash. The police car had emergency blue lights and klaxon in operation.”
Police inquiries into the accident are continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Mark Rogers at Greenock road policing on 492624.
