Tributes to crash dad
By Eric Baxter
THE tragic driver who died in the M8 smash has been praised by his neighbour.
John Craynor, who a few years ago received the MBE for raising funds for Guide Dogs for the Blind, spoke fondly about Thomas Hughes.
John said: “He was a brilliant guy and always willing to lend a hand. Nothing was too much trouble for him.
“His family and friends are devastated by what has happened.”
Police said he died at the scene after appearing to lose control of his Land Rover Defender and colliding with four other vehicles.
It is believed he may have taken unwell just before the accident, although this has not been confirmed by police.
Taggarts’ operation director Stephen Jay said today: “Tommy worked for us for two years. This is a very sad loss for us and his family.
“Tommy had an excellent manner.
“He had a knack of saying the right thing at the right time.
“As well as picking up and dropping off customers’ cars for us, he also drove guests if we were entertaining anyone.”
His family were too upset to talk about the crash, which involved a lorry and four cars and happened around 5pm on Wednesday at Hillington junction 26.
Meanwhile, police are appealing for witnesses to the accident to contact the road policing department on 0141 532 6442.
One of the other vehicles involved was a Ford Mondeo driven by a 54-year-old woman. She was taken to the Southern General Hospital to be treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
None of the other drivers involved were injured.
A full report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.
