ARMED police nabbed a gunman during a secret operation.

Jason Kane, 22, of West Blackhall Street, Greenock, was arrested just minutes after police had seen him being handed a white-coloured plastic bag by another man.

As a result, Strathclyde Police firearms unit were alerted. When police stopped Kane at around 9pm in Seamill, the bag was in the footwell under the front passenger seat.

Prosecutor Gillian Wade told the High Court in Glasgow: “Police found one brown-handled 9mm handgun and a box containing fifty 9mm rounds in the bag.”

Yesterday, Kane admitted two contraventions of the Firearms Act by having a gun and ammo without fireams certificates. The offences were committed in Castleview, Dundonald, and Ardrossan Road, Seamill, on 23 January this year.

Ms Wade added: “The firearm and the ammunition were examined by ballistics expert. The gun was found to be of German manufacture — a Walther model P38 self-loading pistol produced by Mauser Werke in 1942.

“The live rounds were also of German manufacture and were suitable for discharge from the handgun.”

Judge Lord Kinclaven deferred sentence on Kane until next month for background reports.

Defence counsel Mark Moir will give his plea in mitigation then.
