SAVAGE ATTACK: David, left, and Matthew Weir beat their victim with a golf club.

THE victim of a brutal golf club attack feared he was going to be murdered as he suffered a sustained beating at the hands of twin brothers.

Greenock Sheriff Court heard the man had been celebrating his birthday in the town with friends, who included a man named David Weir, before moving on to a nightclub.

There, the victim had a run in with David’s twin, Matthew, a complete stranger at the time.

On Friday, he told the court: “He kept bumping into me on the dance floor and eventually I bumped him back. He was growling at me and my friend so we decided to leave.

“We had been invited back to David’s house and went there. He said his brother was going to come back, but I didn’t think anything of it.

“Then the man from the nightclub walked in, which turned out to be Matthew. He threw keys at me and began making threats.”

The brothers then launched a savage attack, described by one witness as an act of ‘pure evil’, as the man tried to flee the house in Greenock’s St Lawrence Street.

The victim told the court: “David said ‘were you trying to fight with my brother?’ and punched me. I tried to get out of the front door but it was locked and then there was a blow to the back of my head.

“ They began punching, stamping, standing on me and kicking me. I saw Matthew pick up a golf club and then I felt a hard blow to the side of my head.

“Next thing I knew, I was being dragged by my hood, thinking I was going to be killed.

“I woke in a street covered in blood, which was still coming from my face and eye.”

Police found the man and took him to Inverclyde Royal Hospital where he was detained for treatment to injuries which included severe bruising to his ribs, arms and face.

David Weir, of St Lawrence Street, and Matthew Weir, of Greenock’s Belville Street, admitted kicking the man on the head and body before repeatedly striking him with a golf club on 13 December last year.

Sheriff Rajni Swanney said: “Since neither of you have had a custodial sentence I will call for reports. However, custody is something I will be considering.”

A WOMAN who witnessed the horror attack launched by David and Matthew Weir described it in court as an act of ‘pure evil’.

The court heard the girl fled barefoot to get help after watching the pair beat her pal with a golf club as he screamed and cowered on the floor of the flat.

She returned to find a trail of blood along the street.

The 22-year-old thought she was going to find her friend lying dead after returning to David Weir’s house following the attack.

When asked by depute fiscal Morag McClintock how she would describe the events, she said: “It was the worst thing I’ve have ever seen. It was something of pure evil.”

The girl told how her friend called for help as he was attacked.

She said: “They had the golf club and were beating him with it. He was screaming and trying to cover his head. I couldn’t believe what was happening and was trying to pull them off but couldn’t.

“I ran into the close and just started banging doors, then ran into the street to a phonebox and called police.

“I could see people coming down the stairs and I thought it was them coming to get me, so I ran to my boyfriend’s house for help.”

The court was told that when she returned with her partner, the brothers claimed they had smoothed the incident over and put her pal in a taxi home.

She added: “The golf club was lying on the ground covered in blood and snapped in half.

“I said ‘look how hard you hit him’ and they just stared back at me. Neither seemed in any way sorry for what they had done.”
