Police are hunting for an attacker who left a Greenock man with facial injuries after an assault on a train travelling to Gourock.

Two men were assaulted during the late-night attack.

British Transport Police are examining CCTV footage in a bid to identify the attacker.

Officers are looking at images taken from the train and at railway stations to help their inquiry.

The two men were assaulted by another male as they sat opposite each other in the rear carriage of the train.

A 46-year-old man, from the Greenock area, was punched on the head and headbutted.

He was left with facial injuries.

The other victim was a 47-year-old from Bishopton.

He sustained an injury to his nose after being headbutted.

Although shaken, neither of the victims required hospital treatment.

Detective Constable David McVean, of British Transport Police, the officer in charge of the inquiry, said: “This appears to be a totally unprovoked attack.

“I am keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident.

“The train was busy at the time as it was the last train to Gourock from Glasgow on Saturday night.

“We know other passengers assisted the injured men and it is believed a couple who were on the train may have known the suspect.”

The suspect is described as aged between 20 to 25, approximately 5ft 10ins, with dark, curly, collar-length hair.

The attack took place at around 11.50pm on Saturday.

The train was travelling from Glasgow Central to Gourock, and the attack happened as it travelled through the Cardonald area of Glasgow.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information about the identity of the attacker to contact the British Transport Police on 0800 405040.

Information about the incident can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers by calling 0800 55511.
