Port Glasgow Juniors 2, Benburb 0

PORT Glasgow started their season perfectly by beating Benburb 2-0 at home on Saturday.

Ferguson had a chance in 23 minutes with a turning volley from Roberton’s cross.

Port Glasgow’s trialist goalkeeper did well to stop the shot and force the ball out for a corner.

The second half belonged to Port Glasgow and Scott Nugent opened the scoring for the home side with a clever chip over Ghamas in 55 minutes to make it.

Eight minutes later Beckley beat a defender on the left wing before sending a fast, low ball towards Andy Monaghan.

He clipped the ball with his heel inside the six-yard area and grabbed a sneaky goal at the bottom right corner.

Ferguson was sent off for Benburb in 65 minutes after lashing out at Beckley and, despite doing nothing to provoke him, the referee saw it fit to send off the Port Glasgow player too.

Gibson had the last chance for the visitors in 85 minutes, when he beat Port Glasgow’s trialist goalkeeper but his shot from a tight angle hit the side netting.

Benburb are a formidable side and Port Glasgow defeating them so convincingly should boost the team’s confidence immeasurably.
