Joy of six for Greenock men

Greenock Juniors 2,

Cambuslang Rangers 1

Greenock extended their unbeaten run since the season started to six games, but more importantly picked up another three league points against a very slick Cambuslang side.

The opening 15 minutes gave no indication as to the final outcome, Cambuslang totally dominated the game with goalkeeper David Scott having to be alert on a number of occasions.

In 18 minutes he could do nothing as Cambuslang’s centre forward headed home from six yards.

Things seemed to have gone from bad to worse when in 20 minutes Gayne was dismissed for his second bookable offence. This, however, only galvanised the home side who, from this point on, slowly but surely battled their way back into the game.

In 32 minutes, after a spell of intense pressure, Greenock got their deserved equaliser. Steven Dochety was clean through but appeared to be held, the referee ignored the home side appeals. However, within seconds Dow had squared the ball to Barnes whose guided 20-yard effort came off the post and fell to Docherty, who this time duly dispatched the equaliser.

Greenock started the second half the way they finished the first and, in 53 minutes, should have taken the lead when Barnes intercepted a short passback, but his effort was weak.

The breakthrough took some time but was well worth the wait. With 69 minutes gone, McLachlan picked the ball up 30 yards out and sent a blistering drive high into the net.

In spite of numerical superiority the visitors never really troubled the Greenock defence in the second half and the home side ran out worthy winners.
