Greenock look to extend winning run

Printer Print Article

Greenock Juniors travel over the Erskine Bridge tomorrow looking forward to grabbing their third successive victory of the season when they face formidable opposition in the shape of Vale of Leven.

Although Stephen Mooney’s squad have already secured a 3-1 triumph over the Millburn Park men in the Sectional League Cup, tomorrow’s encounter is all about vital league points.

And all indications are that Hugh Hamill’s select are up to the task of providing stiffer competition this time on their home turf.

Greenock have worked extremely hard to extract full points from their opening two league fixtures when facing Thorniewood and Cambuslang. However, club spokesman Neil Martin correctly points out that, in recent games, a lack of discipline has been creeping in — a factor which, if not stamped out, may possibly cost the club points due to players being unavailable with suspensions.

On the more positive side, 19-year-old ex-Shamrock keeper David Scott appears to be looking the part between the posts, and with Ross Gallagher and Stephen Docherty putting in a hard working shift against Cambuslang, the Greenock gaffer’s selection could be a trifle easier.

Stephen Malone is back in contention for a jersey tomorrow, but even more exciting is the excellent news that three strikers, Craig McKellar, Ryan McDonald and Kevin Brown, will all soon be returning from injury, fighting fit and eager to be included in Mooney’s plans.

Vale of Leven have top striker Kevin Montague sharpening up his skills and, of course, no one can afford to dismiss any eleven which contains ex-Greenock favourite Hugh Ward. The Vale boss adds Dougie Wilson to the attack, back following a two-year injury, while young full back Paul Ross is making a name for himself and intends to pose problems for the visitors. After their 2-1 win over Wishaw last Saturday, with strikes from Montague and Filshie, the homesters’ confidence is high, but Greenock’s never-say-die attitude and refusal to accept defeat should see them continue in their unbeaten vein. Kick-off 2pm.
