Port are the team to watch
By David Mackie
Dunipace 0, Port Glasgow 1
PORT Glasgow climbed to second place in the First Division after beating Dunipace 1-0 away from home on Saturday.
The visitors took control of the game in the beginning, with Monaghan trying his luck in eight minutes, but Hutton parried the shot well to keep the score even.
Two minutes later Scott Nugent broke out in the Dunipace half and slotted in a shot from the left-hand side.
His initial attempt was saved by Hutton, but Nugent anticipated this and met the ball to fire in the rebound to make it 1–0.
Port Glasgow had several more chances at goal, but were unable to strengthen their lead and allow themselves to relax.
A strike from Flynn in 30 minutes went inches wide, while 10 minutes later Dunipace’s best chance of the first half, a free kick that collided with the wall before flying towards goal, was cleared off the line by Walton.
The second half was more closely contested, and it was up to Graham and Hutton to keep their teams optimistic.
A 25-yard drive from McKinlay in 55 minutes was saved well by Graham, while Hutton used his legs well to stop Monaghan’s attempt in 75 minutes.
Monaghan almost made it 2-0 when he was taken down 25 yards from goal in 81 minutes.
He stepped up and sent a thunderbolt of a free kick that hit the underside of the bar and bounced off the line before being cleared as some tried to claim a goal.
With three wins from four games now under their belts, Port Glasgow’s confidence will continue to grow and they will undoubtedly be one of the teams to watch for promotion this season.
