GREENOCK Wanderers’ new clubhouse is set for a right royal opening.
The rugby side’s new base at Fort Matilda will be formally opened by HRH The Princess Royal, pictured right, on Monday 18 February.
Princess Anne, who is Patron and a strong supporter of Scottish Rugby, has accepted an invitation from the Wanderers management committee and will visit the state of the art clubhouse in Octavia Terrace, where she’ll unveil a plaque to commemorate the opening.
Her Royal Highness will meet club officials, local dignitaries and also some of the club’s mini section rugby players as part of her visit, which will include a tour of the new facility.
Wanderers president Donnie Cunningham, who will host the event, said: “Everyone involved at the club is absolutely thrilled and honoured the Princess Royal has accepted our invitation and we are all eagerly looking forward to her visit.
“It will be the proudest day in the club’s long history and a great day for the town.
“We are hoping the new clubhouse will be enjoyed by all associated with our rugby club.”
Wanderers are the sixth oldest rugby club in Scotland, having been established in 1873, and settled at their Fort Matilda ground in 1922.
A weekend festival of rugby, incorporating all age groups at the club, will also be held later in the season, to celebrate the successful completion of the new development.
