GREENOCK Wanderers make the short trip to the Lenzie on Scottish Hydro Bowl business tomorrow, having been dispatched from the Scottish Cup by old adversaries Whitecraigs two weeks ago.
The Bowl competition is the supplementary tournament for clubs eliminated from the cup, and another difficult afternoon is forecast for captain Chris Clark and his troops.
Lenzie are sitting on top of Division Three in the National League and, like Whitecraigs, look likely to be promoted into the Second Division next season.
Wanderers, on the other hand, will also be competing at that level, looking certain to fall through the First Division trap door over the next few weeks.
As has been well documented in this column, the form mentality will be vital tomorrow and, despite being in the Third Division at present, the wise money will be on Lenzie to progress into the next round as they’ve had a magnificent season to date and are well used to securing victories at their home ground of Viewfield.
Wanderers, in reality, have little to lose. They have had a dismal season and have won only once this term. They are looking to build for the future and produce a side that will do justice to their magnificent new £1.2 million clubhouse facility.
President Donnie Cunningham said: “We intend on having a good run in the Bowl competition, but our long-term aim is to develop players ahead of next season and to secure some wins to boost confidence with an eye on next year’s campaign.
“The players have never given up this season and there is a lot of ability in the squad, which will be a year older and a year wiser next season. There is plenty of rugby left this year though, and we will plug away and work hard at our game.”
Head coach Dave McVey looks likely to remain loyal to his squad and, as always, much will be expected of the pack as they look to snuff out the hosts’ ball-winning potential. Calum Robb, Jamie Mooney and Liam Scully have all excelled in the lineout thus far and another big game will be expected of this trio tomorrow. Scrum half Andy McDougall has also benefited from a full season of 1st XV rugby and his terrier like qualities will be required to get his pack moving in the right direction.
Lenzie v Greenock Wanderers at Viewfield, kick-off 2.30pm: A Devlin, S McTavish, N Wright, A Knox, C Clark (C), K Smith, D Watson, A McDougall, K Murray, J Adcock, M Rodger, A Hunter, R Lavelle, M Coyle, G Patterson, N Patterson, M McDonald, L Scully, J Mooney, A Abernethy, C Robb, J McKenna.
