Best Morton bet may be the draw

Up for it: Big men Stewart Greacen, centre, and Ryan Harding come up for a corner in a previous meeting with Queens at Cappielow in February.

THREE consecutive draws against the sides now directly above them mean Morton are once again languishing in that crucial ninth spot, albeit on goal difference, with just five matches to play.

All of those clashes bar one are against teams currently in the top half of the table, starting with this weekend’s trip to Queen of the South.

The Doonhamers have a solid home record and this accounts for why they are odds-on favourites at 4/5 with bet365. Davie Irons’ men are considerable outsiders for the win at 10/3 (Betfred), despite having beaten the hosts 3-1 on their last visit to Dumfries.

Given their recent results, many punters may believe the Ton can nick a point at Palmerston Park, where Blue Square quote the sides at 11/4 to share the spoils.

It follows that Coral.co.uk’s 10/1 for neither side to break the deadlock will probably be the subject of a significant number of speculative bets, while Betdirect can expect plenty of takers for the 6/1 they post against Morton playing out another 1-1 draw.

As narrow outsiders, the Ton are automatically a goal to the good in Sportingbet’s handicap betting, where they are priced at 17/20. With head starts discounted, Irons’ charges are 14/1 (Partybets) to record a 2-1 victory and 17/20 (Sportingbet) to go in on level terms at the break but rouse themselves sufficiently in the second period to land a maximum haul.

To say today’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox is crucial would be something of an understatement. Victory for Rangers, priced by VCBet at 6/5, would take them six points clear of rivals Celtic, who are 23/10 (Betdaq) to eradicate the Gers lead and join the top of the table, having played a game more.

The hosts’ form, not to mention their impressive home record, make them worthy favourites and it’s hard to see them losing, so it may be worth backing Walter Smith’s men at 3/10 (Partybets) to avoid defeat.

However, a draw (9/4, Canbet) — so often the result in such close contests — can’t be ruled out
