Pastures new: Chris Millar is definitely going to St Johnstone, despite a renewed Morton effort to persuade him to stay.

CHRIS Millar is finally on his way out of Cappielow.

The Telegraph understands the player will be unveiled at St Johnstone today.

As revealed on Monday, Millar was facing a moral dilemma over the move, as Morton made a last-gasp effort to convince the player to stay.

A pre-contract agreement was made with the Saints in December, but it seemed as though the popular midfielder may have been reluctant to leave after emotional scenes at Firhill on Saturday.

However, Millar will be playing in Perth next year, after finalising a two-year deal at McDiarmid Park earlier this morning.

He said: “Morton made me a fantastic offer, but I’d come to an agreement with Derek McInnes. I felt the right thing to do was move on.

“St Johnstone were challenging for promotion this year, so it’s the right decision for my football career.

"It’s nothing to do with the management, the deal was already done before they came in. You can see the ambition at the club.

“The chairman did everything he could to make me stay at the club — but I feel it’s the right time to go.”

Morton boss Davie Irons acknowledged the difficult position Millar was in, and said: “The club have made an effort to keep him, but only Chris could decide. I don’t want to force anyone to make a decision they don’t want to make.”

Millar has been with Morton for five years, and been part of two championship-winning teams, and the local lad said: “I’ll always have a soft spot for Morton. I’ve had an enjoyable time here and I’m sure I’ll still be around Cappielow from time to time.

"You never know, I might come back and manage the club one day.”
