It’s quality for the Ton
By Roger Graham
MORTON chairman Douglas Rae has confirmed that signings for the new season will be based on quality, rather than quantity.
He said: “We are better having fewer players and a higher quality of player.”
The Morton owner said that manager Davie Irons and his assistant, Derek Collins, have been given the go-ahead to look for players from the higher levels of the Scottish Football League, or the Premier League.
He continued: “The existing team is better than the one which began the season and we will probably have around 18 players in the squad for next season.”
With the management team tied up on contracts — no exact term being revealed — they can now concentrate on the business of strengthening a squad which they accepted was very brittle when they first arrived in February.
Reinforcing the quality of player now sought, the Ton chairman made reference to Australian midfielder Erik Paartalu, signed on a two-yeard deal before he left last week to his homeland for a well earned break. “He is the type of guy we want,” Rae said. “He is someone who can bring something to the team.”
Meanwhile, Mr Rae will meet with Davie Irons and Derek Collins today to discuss the optioins available for a pre-season tour. He said: “I don’t know yet whether we’ll be going down south again, up north or to Ireland.”
