Heads up: Ton skipper Stewart Greacen is set for another three years at Cappielow.

STEWART Greacen has agreed a deal to stay at Cappielow for the next three years.

Centre-half Greacen, 26, has come to terms with the club over a new contract, with the formalities expected to be taken care of later today.

The towering defender had attracted the attentions of other top SFL clubs, leading to some uncertainty as to whether he would remain in the West.

Greacen, however, insists speculation is always going to exist in football, but a new contract with Morton was never far from his mind.

He said: “There was some paper-talk, but it’s always the same when you have a player reaching the end of his contract.

“I’m just delighted to have the new contract, it means I can concentrate on preparing for next season.

“I have no hesitation at all in staying, I really enjoy being at the club.

“Hopefully now we can get a few more players tied up and build for next year.”

Greacen joined Morton from Forfar Athletic in 2003, having previously enjoyed a loan spell at the club. He has since been a fixture in the Ton rearguard, making over 160 appearances for the club.

He has blown hot and cold this season, but was in commanding form in the league run-in after being reinstalled as captain by incoming boss Davie Irons.

Despite a poor league showing this year, Greacen is upbeat about Morton’s prospects next season, and said: “Since Davie came in we have worked a lot on our defending, and you can see the improvement.

“There has been a remarkable difference since February, even in the confidence we have, and the last few games just go to show that.

“The manager is in the process of building a solid squad next year, and I am delighted to be a part of it.

“Hopefully we will find ourselves scrapping at the other end of the table next year.”

Now that his contract is finally settled, Greacen is looking forward to a relaxing summer, before it starts all over again in late June.

He said: “I’m going to have a good stress-free break, now that my contract has been agreed, and then do a little light work before coming back in.

“It’s been a long hard season — but for now I’m just going to go and enjoy the summer.”
