Trialists drafted in as Greenock bow out
By Gary Pews
GREENOCK bring the curtain down on their season tomorrow with a home match against Stonehouse Violet.
The local side will be looking to make amends for a 3-2 defeat in the corresponding away fixture just two weeks ago, a result which effectively killed off their chances of promotion.
However, it will be an unfamiliar starting 11 which takes to the field at Ravenscraig. Manager Stevie Mooney will be without the services of Sean Stirling, who is on holiday, and Alan Colsh, who has work commitments.
Also marked absent for various other reasons are Alan Barnes, Martin Campbell and Jamie Ross, so the ubiquitous ‘trialist’ may feature large, especially on the subs bench.
Another name not listed will be that of Gary Phillips, who hasn’t featured since a bust-up with Mooney on the pitch at Stonehouse. The left-back looks to have played his last game for the club, although the manager hasn’t slammed the door shut on a possible return next season.
Having come so close only to be narrowly pipped in the promotion race, Mooney is already planning some personnel changes for the new campaign, but expects to find it tough going.
He said: “We are a bit out of the way down here so it can be hard to tempt players from teams in the Glasgow area.
“The other problem is that Inverclyde has a very strong amateur set-up, with guys who really just want to play with their mates. Many don’t want to make the step up to junior football.”
Kick-off at Ravenscraig tomorrow is at 2pm.
l Greenock Juniors are sponsored by National Semiconductor (UK) Ltd and Allied Trades Ltd. Tomorrow’s match equipment sponsored by KHM Plumbing and Heating.
