Port selection woe
By Gary Pews
Ruled out: Port Glasgow striker Scott Nugent is struggling to come back from a hamstring injury.
BRIAN Heron has major selection worries ahead of tomorrow’s match at Larkhall.
As Port Glasgow reach the ‘business end’ of their battle for promotion, Heron will be without Stephen Flynn. The midfielder is getting married, and it’s likely that other players will also be at the wedding ceremony.
The Port’s twin strike-force of Scott Nugent and Andy Monaghan could also be unavailable, at least from the start. They are still recovering from hamstring injuries, and neither featured in Wednesday night’s victory at Blantyre.
Heron, however, is understanding about the situation. He said: “People have other commitments, and a life outside of football, so we just have to accept that and get on with it.”
It is just two weeks since the teams  last met, when the match at Ravenscraig ended on a sour note with the Port unhappy about Larkhall’s physical approach.
There were also claims that a Port player had been elbowed in an off-the-ball incident.
Heron doesn’t expect it to be any easier tomorrow. He added: “They are a big, strong, physical side so it will be real hard tussle. My approach will be different from the last time, but mainly because I will be without a few key players.”
Heron is full of praise for the recent performances of Stewart Jack, and will be looking to the tricky winger to unlock the Larkhall defence. The former Queen’s Park player has shone since gaining a regular starting place, but admits it took him some time to adjust to the frenetic pace of the junior game.
Said Jack: “At a senior level you actually get a bit more time on the ball. But I am enjoying playing with Port Glasgow, although I would hope to improve on what I do in the final third of the park.”
Kick-off at Larkhall is at 2pm.
