GREENOCK 0 STONEHOUSE 2
GREENOCK’S season ended with a whimper on Saturday as they lost to Stonehouse for the second time in a fortnight.
Despite a number of regulars being unavailable, Greenock were the much more lively team in the opening exchanges, with the best chance falling to Gary Loughran, who broke the offside trap to go one-on-one with the keeper but screwed the ball past from 10 yards.
The visitors then struck with a quickfire double, opening the scoring in 34 minutes when a simple ball upfield caught the Greenock defence napping. The home side’s defensive frailties were exposed again just four minutes later. Kevin Brown was caught in possession following a throw-out from keeper David Scott, and Stonehouse took full advantage to net their second.
The Ravenscraig men pushed hard to get back into the match in the second half, but the closest they came to scoring was a Brown effort in 75 minutes which rattled the post from 12 yards.
And so a season which at one time promised so much has ended in huge disappointment for Greenock. Stevie Mooney’s team have finished in sixth place in the 10-club Central Second Division, with just seven wins from 18 matches.
The rebuilding work for next season is already under way, but Mooney admits it will be a hard task. He said: “I asked the players after the match to have a long think about what they really want out of football.
“I want the ones who are prepared to be dedicated to the club, who are willing to work hard at their game and listen to advice. However, I would like to put on record my thanks to the squad for all their efforts this season.”
The manager will soon be looking at signing up some new recruits and is keen to hear from any amateur players in the area who feel they might be ready for a step up to junior level.
