IT is only May, but Greenock Cricket Club’s hopes of retaining their Scottish Premier League title already look bleak after two defeats over the weekend.

On Saturday, Grange comprehensively defeated the title-holders, having scored 219 for five wickets in the first innings.

With Stuart Davidson grabbing the first three Glenpark wickets with only 27 on the board, the scene was set for a comfortable win for the Edinburgh side, Greenock falling 65 short of the target.

The star of the capital club’s innings was Scottish bat Neil McCallum who hit 80. He had good support from New Zealand pro McSkimmin, 46, Giles Holmes, 32, and Davidson, 23.

Dougie Wylie bowled a good spell of 10 overs, taking one wicket for an economical 32. On Sunday the Scotland Under-19s raced to an impressive 316 for six wickets against some less than impressive home bowling. G. Chalmers hit 105, S. Coleman 103 and S. Burnett 57 for the young Scots against a weakened Greenock team.

On the bowling front, Tim McIntosh took three for 64 and Richie Berrington two for 57.

In reply Greenock were 224 all out, McIntosh top scoring with 56, Shailesh Prabhue hitting one short of his half century in an impressive knock, then Harry Howe managing 30.

The chase was never on, however, Brock taking four for 41 as the hosts were finally skittled out in 48.1 overs.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Greenock pair Sean Weeraratna and Dewald Nel bowled for the Scottish side against Durham in the Friends Provident Trophy at Citylets, Grange.

Weeraratna took one for 38 off 10 overs, and Nel two for 42 off his 10 as Durham reached 181 for nine wickets in 50 overs.

In reply Scotland were 52 for five in 17.1 overs when the umpires stopped play due to bad light, well short of the required Duckworth Lewis target.
