Mark Pollard: He won silver at Edinburgh in the 5,000 metres.

INVERCLYDE AC’s Mark Pollard was the club’s top senior at the Scottish Senior Closed Championships and West District Track and Field Championships at Meadowbank Stadium, Edinburgh at the weekend.

Pollard, more noted for his 1500m escapades on the track, took part in the longer 5000m in the Senior Closed Championships. In a top quality final, club captain Pollard took silver on the day, clocking 14.41.46 behind Central AC’s Alastair Hay, who recorded a personal best time of 14.31.65.

Pollard’s team-mate, Chris MacKay, back running competitively again after injury, also took a well-deserved bronze medal in third place, timed at 14.47.93.

In the senior men’s 1500m final, Craig Ruddy finished agonisingly just outside of the medals in fourth place overall in a closely contested race, timing 3.57.57.

Winner of the event was Andrew Gibson of Kilbarchan AAC, clocking a time of 3.55.84. The club’s Graeme Hyett also took part in one of the toughest events on the track, the senior men’s 3000m Steeplechase final. He came home third in a time of 10.20.15, behind Alexander Hendry of Central AC in 9.57.04.
