MORTON yesterday completed the signing of goalkeeper Colin Stewart on a two-year deal.

28-year-old Stewart, who was first choice at Livingston last term, signalled his arrival with a challenge — to make the number one jersey his own.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a challenge, but a challenge I’m well capable of achieving.

“You look to who else is going to come in, but I’ve been at various clubs where I’ve been first choice — I’ve risen to the challenge before, I don’t see why I can’t do it again.

“I’m not coming here to be a second choice, my main aim is to come here to play for Morton, and hopefully take the club to the level everyone thinks we should be at.”

Delighted Ton manager Davie Irons made it clear that Stewart would prove an ample replacement for the position left vacant by the departure of Lee Robinson and David McGurn, and said: “Obviously it was a priority to get someone into the goalkeeping position, and I’m delighted to get Colin.

“He is a vastly experienced goalkeeper, has played at a good level all his career, and has that added dimension with his presence in the box.

“He also comes from a good background, his father Jim was a keeper as well.

“We will now be looking to bring in competition — it’s a key area.”

Stewart is well aware of the perils that belie wearing the keeper’s jersey, but insists that he has taken things in his stride during his career, and is relishing a future at Cappielow.

He said: “It’s a position that’s under scrutiny all the time, but these are thing you learn to deal with when you’re young. You’ve got to be a strong character to be a goalkeeper, and I’m coming here to play. I’m 28 but I’ve still got a fair while to go, and my goal is to take it further here at Morton. It’s an ambitious club, with a lot of ambitious people, and an ambitious chairman.

“It’s a fresh challenge for myself, I’ve been involved with the west coast for a long time in football, and I’m glad to be involved with a club like this who I feel can achieve good things.”

Meanwhile, boss Irons remains confident of adding a few more top players to his squad before rebuilding for the new campaign comes to an end.

He said: “We have another three or four players we would like to bring in, but we are aware of the budget, so we have to balance the two.

“We can’t really spend money on players, but we can still bring in a good calibre of player for this level.”
