On top: Andy McCall running off the summit of Ben Lomond

GREENOCK Glenpark Harriers Andy McCall continued his outstanding start to his season on the hills last weekend at Ben Lomond.

After a steady climb in very warm conditions, he produced a very fast descent off the mountain summit, pulling in five places to finish runner-up just behind Carnethy’s Scottish internationalist Stewart Whitlie.

He completed the Nine-mile/3100 foot run in 75.26 minutes.

Also running for Glenpark was the in-form Danny McLaughlin (22nd), the veteran finishing in an excellent 83.58. Davy Ballantyne (71st) came home in 1.40.10, while father and son, Iain and Andrew Rankin, also took part. The youngster, making an impressive hill-race debut, broke the two-hour mark by three minutes, leaving his dad trailing 10 minutes behind.

McCall’s next race is this weekend when he celebrates his 21st birthday by tackling Goatfell, on Arran. With only seven days rest after Ben Lomond, the 10-mile run to and from the 2900 foot summit will test the youngster’s strength and endurance to the limit.

On his first outing a fortnight earlier at Kaim Hill, Fairlie, McCall collected the winner’s trophy for the third year in a row. Along with Danny McLaughlin in 10th and Michael McLoone jnr in 15th, the Harriers also claimed the top team prize.
