Andrew’s golden display
Golden boy: Andrew Campbell, 284, who won gold, alongside Paul Currie.
INVERCLYDE AC juniors returned from a weekend at Meadowbank Stadium with a West District champion in Andrew Campbell.
Andrew, back to top form, challenged from the start of the Under-17 men’s 1500 metres and made a decisive move to the front with 300m left, winning in a new personal best time, well clear of the chasing pack.
In addition to Andrew’s splendid run, there were two more medallists and a large number of personal bests.
Saturday events were mainly the younger boys, with the older girls competing in the 1500m.
An early start did not deter Jack Rice from qualifying for the U-13 boys’ 800m with a new PB to his credit. Running faster again in the final, Jack finished in fifth place. While not making the final, Inverclyde’s other U-13 participants in the 800m, Robert Todd and Josh Houston, ran new bests.
Three U-15 boys from Inverclyde were on the starting line for the final of their 800m, with Mathew Thomson finishing just outside the medallists in fourth place in a new best time. Rory Kelham and Michael Houston also ran PBs to finish eighth and ninth.
In the field events, U-15 boy Jason Lafferty, competing for his school, Glasgow School of Sport, took silver in the long jump and qualified for the 200m, finishing in fourth place.
Inverclyde’s other sprinter, Michael Mulholland, missed qualifying for both the 100m and 200m and was just outside his indoor PB against a strong headwind.
Paul Currie also showed a return to form and an encouraging run in his first race in the age group with a new PB.
In the U-17 women’s 1500m event, Emma Rice ran a new PB and just missed dipping under five minutes to finish sixth. In the same event, Emma Fulton took a massive 10 seconds off her PB and showed no sign of nerves in her first championship event in this age group.
Sunday was the turn of the younger girls to perform, and four Inverclyde U-13s took part in the 800m. Emma Meechan, in the U-15 girls’ event, showed a return to form as she comfortably won through to the final, equalling her PB.
In the final, she ran even faster to take the bronze medal, just being pipped for silver by two-hundredths of a second.
Sarah Glenny, new to the U-15 age group, was encouraged by reaching the final of the 200m, while Milissa Montague finished the 1500m event just outside her PB.
In the U-17 events, Andrew Campbell easily won his heat, but, despite running a new PB in the final, was not able to add to his medal collection.
Newly moved up to the U-17 age group, Nynke Mulholland finished sixth in a time just outside her PB.
Many Thanks go to Rhona Bushfield, Ronnie Campbell, Janice Hendrie and Martin Mulholland for help with transport over the weekend.
