All to play for
By Gary Pews
Waiting game: Port’s top striker Scott Nugent hopes to be fit enough to play at some point tomorrow.
SIR Alex Ferguson’s ‘squeeky-bum roadshow’ rolls into town tomorrow for Port Glasgow’s last league match of the season.
Ravenscraig will be no place for the faint-hearted as the Port battle for the three points which would not only win promotion to the Super League First Division, but also see them crowned as champions.
After a frenetic period, with games almost every three days for two weeks, Port boss Brian Heron has eased off on training this week and goes into tomorrow’s match with the only injury worry being top scorer Scott Nugent.
The striker has barely featured since a hamstring injury picked up at Yoker, but hopes to play at some point on Saturday.
Standing in Port’s way is Dunipace, a side already doomed to relegation — but Heron is taking nothing for granted.
He said: “It’s in our own hands now. We have earned the right but Dunipace will be nobody’s mugs.
“They will come here looking for pride and might even be an unknown entity to us if they decide to field some trialists with a view to next season. So we will not be taking them lightly.”
A draw would clinch promotion, and might even be enough to win the league depending on the result between Lanark and Glencairn, who also play tomorrow.
Heron insists promotion is the main objective, with a title win an added bonus. He said: “We didn’t set heady targets of saying we were going to win the league. It’s great if you do, but the objective at the start of the season was moving up out of this division, and that is hopefully what we will achieve.”
Kick-off at Ravenscraig tomorrow is at 2pm, and Port officials are again urging fans to turn out in force and back the local team.
