MORTON manager Davie Irons is very pleased to have persuaded Stevie Masterton to sign on at Cappielow.
The player will not officially be a signed Ton player until 25 May, when his deal with Clyde runs out, but he has already agreed to join up at Cappielow.
Irons said: “He’s a player I’ve been looking at for a while. I wanted to get him when I was with Gretna.
“We’re delighted to have him and he will add to our side. Although he’s still young, he is an experienced First Division player. He is technically very good.”
It was obvious towards the end of last season that Morton were lacking a dead ball expert, the area Kieran McAnespie was expected to cover.
However, he fell out of favour and Morton lacked someone with the precision to execute free kicks and corner.
Irons continued: “He is like David Beckham in the way he delivers the ball at set plays.
“He is the best outwith the Premier League. He also has his best days in front of him.”
Masterton is versatile, but Irons sees him operating in the centre of midfield. He said: “He will play in that area alongside Erik Paartalu. We are looking to play a different system next season.
“If we have these two in centre midfield, we also have pace on either side. We are looking to bring in someone who can play in front of them too.”
Asked about the new system, Irons replied: “It all depends on who we can bring in. We also have to move players out.
“We need another goalkeeper and I would like to bring in another couple of players as well.
“I’m quite happy with what we have at the moment, but we need another three.”
