THE champagne flowed at Ravenscraig on Saturday, as Port Glasgow clinched the Central League First Division title.

A comfortable 3-0 win against Dunipace sees the Port promoted to the West of Scotland League First Division. There they will meet some of the top Ayrshire teams such as Largs and Kilbirnie, and will also mix it with big names Shotts Bon Accord, Clydebank and Renfrew.

An ecstatic Port manager Brian Heron paid tribute to his squad, who lost just two games during a gruelling 22-match league campaign, in addition to competing for various other trophies.

He said: “They are a fit bunch of young lads, who work hard and are well organised. We hiccuped a couple of times but it wasn’t through lack of effort, and we thoroughly deserved to win the league. Myself and the coaching team are absolutely delighted.”

Scott Nugent’s strike on Saturday took his tally for the season to 28, but the striker was keen to share the praise. He said: “We work hard for each other and teamwork has been the key to our success. But I am delighted as this has been the most goals I have scored in a season. I am looking forward to new challenges next season, playing at different grounds, but am sure we are up for it and will do well.’’

Port’s season isn’t over yet, though. Their title win qualifies them for the Cup-Winners Cup, and they are still in contention for the Central League Cup, with a trip to Blantyre in the last 16 on Friday night.

Brian Heron won’t be there, though — the boss is heading for sunnier climes tomorrow as he leaves for a week’s holiday.
