MORTON are closing in on the signature of a second goalkeeper, Stephen Robertson of Airdrie United.
The Telegraph understands that 31-year-old Robertson was locked in talks at New Broomfield yesterday, but is stalling over agreeing a new deal.
Ton boss Davie Irons was unwilling to confirm the rumour, but it is believed that a two-year deal has been tabled for the player.
With Morton losing both David McGurn and Lee Robinson at the end of last term, filling the goalkeeping position was always going to be a priority during the close season.
Irons was delighted to have completed the signing of ex-Livingston keeper Colin Stewart last week, but maintained that competition for the number one jersey would be essential.
Glaswegian Robertson began his career at St Johnstone, and was with the Perth club for seven years before moving to Clydebank. He has been with Airdrie for the past three seasons, and played a prominent role last term as the Diamonds reached the Division Two play-off final.
Now, as Airdrie’s future hangs in the balance until the Gretna situation is resolved, the guarantee of First Division football could sway the player on a move to Cappielow.
