Jenkins is so keen to start
By Steven McArthur
LET ME IN: Allan Jenkins is eager to get a full 90 minutes on the park for Morton after recovering from injury.
AFTER stepping out onto the Cappielow pitch for the final 10 minutes of last weekend’s defeat against Livingston, Allan Jenkins insists: “I one hundred per cent want to start on Saturday.”
Jenkins, who has not been at full fitness since joining the Ton in January, is now looking forward to putting his problems well and truly behind him and focus on getting fully match-fit.
Ex-Stranraer and Gretna dynamo Jenkins has featured so infrequently that to the Cappielow faithful he will seem like a brand new player.
And although he says that his cameos have so far been largely for fitness reasons, he has shown sparks in those brief spells that show potential should he embark on a prolonged run in the first team.
The 26-year-old said: “I am in full training, I’m doing everything the boys are doing. Match fitness is maybe lacking, but that’s the way it’s going to be. I am feeling good though.
“I just need more games. I felt fine on Saturday, but it’s always hard coming on to make an impact.
“I am available and one hundred per cent want to start on Saturday. That’s my aim, but whether the manager wants to use me gradually is his decision.”
Jenkins insists there is no need for doom and gloom at Sinclair Street, and said: “We had an okay start [to the season] – not great but not poor either.
“Against Clyde, we dropped two points with that last minute goal, and against St Johnstone we did well to take a point at home, but again we could have won.
“We have had a decent few results in the cups, scoring goals and gaining confidence. [On Saturday] the first 20 minutes killed us.
“You can’t give teams a two-goal start, and you definitely shouldn’t have to score three goals to win a game, especially at home.”
The Stranraer man is continuing to look forward with optimism, and is intent on turning the tables on fancied Dundee on Saturday when the Ton visit the City of Discovery.
He said: “When Saturday comes we will be looking to put the record straight. No place is a fortress, but having said that, it is hard to gauge.
“Dundee are a good side, but we are not going to go there with any fear or feeling like underdogs — we are just going there to get a result.
“We really have to show we can go places and bring the points home.”
