Wake: players response now the key factor
By Roger Graham
Positive thinking: Brian Wake, right, with strike partner Iain Russell, says players can’t dwell on Airdrie defeat.
MORTON striker Brian Wake has said that the players can’t afford to dwell on that 5-0 hammering at Airdrie last week and must put it behind them when they take on Queen of the South this Sunday in the Alba Challenge Cup.
He said: “It was very disappointing for us as players, especially after the cup on Tuesday against Hibs when we played really well.
“I can understand the fans’ frustration, but no one was more frustrated than the players and management.”
Players and management met on Sunday to go over the whys and wherefores of the drubbing at the Excelsior Stadium and Wake said: “Obviously what was said at that meeting stays there, but it was the right thing to do and we have to respond positively and kick-on.
“We trained again on Monday and worked really hard. We can’t afford to dwell on it. Sometimes these things happen in football and it’s all about how you respond that’s important.”
Although one of the front men, Wake commented: “We defend as a team and we have to close down from the front.”
Being on the back foot for so much of the match meant that Wake and strike partner Iain Russell had precious few chances. “We started okay in the first couple of minutes, but we lost three quickfire goals. It’s hard to respond to that.”
Queen of the South are one of the form teams in the First Division, and it won’t be anything other than very difficult at Palmerston, but Wake said: “It doesn’t matter who you play in this division. We have seen that everyone is capable of beating each other.
“We’ve just got to get Saturday out of our minds.”
